History and Accomplishments:
Karen Amadio Gates

Folk artist, Karen Amadio Gates has been creating needlework of one kind or another since childhood. She first discovered punchneedle embroidery at a folk festival in 2000. Captivated by the resemblance to miniature hooked rugs, Karen was immediately drawn to this unique art form which originated in the 18th century.

Her original designs, inspired by the craftsmanship of colonial artisans are actually worked from the back of the fabric. Using a single strand of embroidery floss, the punch needle is inserted into the cloth to outline and fill-in the hand drawn folk art design.

These diminutive treasures make an enchanting addition to a doll house and can be custom designed by special order. When framed in Karen’s false grained picture frames they are sure to be a cherished gift and a lovely addition to any home.

Karen is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and was recently selected as one of Early Americana’s Best Craftsmen by Historical Publications, Ltd. She has been chosen to join the distinguished group of craftsmen who comprise the 2004, 2005, AND 2006 Directory of Traditional American Crafts® published by Early American Life Magazine.

Internationally known, her work has been displayed in gift shops and museums. She has become a sought after speaker, teacher and demonstrator of this craft. She and husband, Tom, live in the heart of Bucks County, Pennsylvania where they are raising two sons, Tyler and Jordan.
